If you would like to add to your family through adoption, there are several steps in the process to be aware of.
Adoption process overview
Usually, potential adoptive families start by researching an adoption agency they would like to work with and may attend an information session to learn about the requirements. Once you are accepted by the agency, you will need to undergo a home study which is an evaluation of your lifestyle and your living environment. The adoption agency may request interviews with your friends and family as well.
You will also need to submit documents, such as paystubs and medical reports to demonstrate that you are physically and financially able to care for a child. After all of the paperwork is complete, you will wait for the agency to match you with a child.
Petition
The first step is to submit a petition for adoption with the court. The child’s biological parents will need to either voluntarily terminate their parental rights or if the court finds that it is necessary, it may involuntarily terminate them.
The court will review your home study, including the results of any background checks or screenings and other documentation. It may appoint a guardian ad litem to represent the child. Then, the court will schedule a hearing to determine whether the adoption is in the child’s best interest.
Once the court approves the adoption, it will issue a final order which gives the adoptive parents all rights and responsibilities for the child.
The adoption agency may offer the parents post-adoption resources and support.
