Know the statistics and problem locations for Memphis auto crashes
Memphis has long had a high rate of fatal auto accidents. Between 2018 and 2021, there were just over 24 road deaths for every 100,000 residents. A significant portion of those fatalities were due to drivers who were under the influence at 7.5 for every 100,000 residents. This was in the top 10 in the U.S.
Specific intersections also had a higher propensity for collisions. By the third week in December 2024, five intersections alone had at least 100 accidents. Overall, they had almost 600 accidents.
The worst was Winchester and Riverdale with 140. There were 133 on E. Shelby and Millbranch; 119 on 1-240 and Poplar; 104 on American Way and Lamar Ave.; and 102 on Winchester Rd. and Hickory Hill Rd. The intersections with the highest number of fatal crashes differed. Fortunately, two of those intersections and three such accidents while two others had two each. Still, even one fatal crash is too many.
Across Memphis, there were 162 auto fatalities with two weeks remaining in the year. The time of day was crucial with over six in 10 fatalities happening at night. Twelve happened in locations that did not have lights.
The aftermath of an auto accident can be costly
People who have been impacted by an auto accident whether they were injured or it was a loved one who was hurt or lost their life must think about the future. The priority is making a full physical recovery with injuries properly treated. However, people often forget about other factors.
That includes lost time at work, long-term damage and unforeseen and understated consequences. Having comprehensive advice is critical from the outset as it can avoid mistakes that can be problematic in the long-term.
