Tips for communicating with your ex about your children

Communication can be one of the most difficult things to do when you end a romantic relationship with your child’s other parent. When children aren’t involved in the split, you don’t have to talk to an ex anymore. But that’s typically not possible if you share children.

The way that you and your ex communicate can have an impact on the children. They may start to feel stressed out and worried if they hear you and their other parent fighting often. Because of this, it’s critical that you keep things calm — especially in front of the children.

Focus on child-related matters

Conversations with your ex should focus on the children. There’s a chance that things will get tense during these conversations, so it’s important that you know when you need to take a break. Be sure to set a time to resume the conversation if you have to step away. This can give you and your ex both a chance to determine what type of compromise is best for the children.

Avoid contentious matters when the children are around

The children should never hear you and your ex argue. Having conversations on transition days that could become contentious isn’t a good idea. These conversations should be handled when the children aren’t around. Additionally, never send messages to your ex through your children.

Having a comprehensive parenting plan is one way that you can help ensure that you and your ex are on the same page about important aspects of raising the children. This can often minimize the amount of fighting. Parenting plans must be set with the child’s needs in mind, so it’s wise to have experienced legal guidance when developing or modifying one.
